MISSION REQUIREMENTS REVIEW
The COMS subsystem analysis has to consist of three parts – the Mission Requirements Document (COMS-MRD), the System Definition Document (COMS-SDD) and the Groundsegment Definition Document (COMS-GDD).

The MRD determines the working parameters required for successful LEO satellite communication and their principal values, as well as the data rates required for uplink/downlink. Downloadable here.

The SDD determines a suitable way of implementing and integrating a COMS system meeting the requirements set out in the MRD. It will have to consider suitable frequency space, protocols, antenna, pointing requirements, required time “over the horizon” and interfaces with the other subsystems.

The GDD determines the requirements on the ground segment, data handling and storage and control systems as well as radio operator licenses required. These requirements are significantly less stringent than those in the SDD since the equipment does not have to fit into a constrained envelope and servicing is possible. Downloadable here
